What is this?
This is our second attempt at running the weekly CARP Net in Simplex mode. The purpose of this is to ensure that all operators that attend the CARP net are capable of working the net in Simplex mode and also dealing with the slight change in protocols.
When we tried this at the end of August, it was apparent that the Net Control station needs to have a better transmit capability and to that end, I am experimenting with a few new antennas. Hopefully these will alleviate that problem. I am thinking that my home made quarter wave ground plane antenna may not have been up to the task.
It is/was also apparent that I need to research proper protocols for Simplex nets. One thing will be the possible need for relays. No matter how good the antennas we will be using, there will inevitably be some stations that will be out of reach for the net control station. In those cases, the unheard station may still be picked up by another station and we will want to be able to relay the unheard station to net control. While this may seem a bit unneeded for a weekly net, in an emergency, there can easily be priority traffic that needs to be passed along. Stations other than the net control station can play a vital role in these circumstances. This may be the proper time for some of the remote stations to look at their antennas also.
