Two forms required during your Amateur Radio license examination process require a unique ID number. These are:
- NCVEC Quick-Form 605 Application for Amateur Operator/Primary Station License
- ARRL VEC Written Element Exam Answer Sheet
Options are your Social Security Account Number (SSAN) or the FCC Registration Number (FRN). The FRN identifies you with the CORES (Commission Registration System) and can be used with most Amateur Radio related FCC interactions. With ID theft a real concern of many, the use of FRN provides a safe alternative to using your SSAN. A simple on-line process is used to obtain an FRN. Your SSAN is required to obtain the FRN.
What information do I need to provide to get an FCC Registration Number (FRN):
- Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) – For individuals this is a Social Security Number (SSAN)
- The name of the individual or business
- Type of business
- Contact information
- Password – at least 6 characters – must include three of four character types
- Uppercase Letters (A, B, C, etc)
- Lower Case Letters (a, b, c, etc)
- Special Characters (~, !, @, etc)
- Numbers (1, 2, 3, etc) · Personal Security Question (PSQ) and answer (not case sensitive)
Procedure
Obtaining an FRN is a simple secure on-line process-
- Go to the Commission’s Registration System (CORES) https://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/coresWeb/publicHome.do and Click Register
- Answer whether the FRN is for an individual or business and whether the addressfor the contact is within the US and click Continue
- Complete the registration information an click Submit
Alternate Procedure
Use your SSAN when registering for your Technician Exam and the FCC will automatically assign you an FRN. It will be listed on your license and can then be used when you upgrade or need to communicate with the FCC.
